General Job Description: The position of Children’s Music Ministry Director at Capitol Hill United Methodist Church will create an inviting, vibrant, dynamic, and engaging children’s music ministry (grades K-5th). The director will help prepare the children to share music in worship and in so doing teach basic music principles, develop performance confidence, create an understanding and practice of worship leadership, and cultivate. community among children, parents, members, and guests of CHUMC. 

This position is a part-time role that requires ½ hour weekly teaching and rehearsal on Sunday morning for approximately 28-34 weeks per year as well as some prep time and directing children’s musical offerings in worship or other appropriate settings. This position is supervised by the Deacon of Discipleship who oversees the Children’s Ministry.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Nurture a love for music and God while preparing children to sing confidently in worship .  Where appropriate, involve choreography or movement that augments the musical offerings.
  • Coordinate with Music Director and Deacon of Discipleship on approximately 4 performances a year in worship of Christian music.  Some of these may include the larger children’s ministry or be an inter-generational music opportunity.
  • Work with and equip some adult volunteers who can integrate the music lessons and skills into Sunday School, VBS, etc.  
  • With time, create a ministry of excellence that is guest friendly so that all may feel welcome no matter their musical ability. Likewise, in line with the church’s mission to welcome all and to be the Heart of God in the Community of Capitol Hill, the director will welcome and encourage diversity.


  • Musical skills, aptitude, training and experience with a diverse range of musical styles
  • Experience working with children ages 5-12
  • An ability and commitment to work with parents and to train and equip adult volunteers
  • Ideally, aptitude and experience in worship leadership and have a working knowledge of the repertoire for young choirs, possibly in combination with the adult choir.
  • Bachelor of Music or Education degree or another related field
  • Work authorization for employment in the U.S.
  • A Christ-centered faith which expresses itself in healthy, joyful relationship with God and others
  • A team-player with a cooperative spirit and ability to work collaboratively with members of the staff, parents, and lay volunteers
