St. John’s Church, Lafayette Square announces the search for a part-time Assistant Organist. Founded in 1815, St. John’s is among Washington’s oldest Episcopal parishes. Best known as The Church of Presidents, St. John’s welcomes a community of parishioners of diverse backgrounds from every corner of the Washington metropolitan region.

The Assistant Organist will join the Director of Music, Choir Personnel Manager, and Music Librarian in the daily operation of a robust music ministry. She or he will serve as principal accompanist of the church’s two choirs. The St. John’s Choir is comprised of 12 professional musicians who sing for the 11:00 am Eucharist each Sunday. The Parish Choir is a devoted group of 30 volunteers who are joined by 8 staff singers for the 9:00 am Eucharist. St. John’s is fortunate to have an excellent three-manual organ built by Lively-Fulcher in 2009.

While exceptional organ playing is the priority of this position, the Assistant Organist will at times assist with the training of the choirs and serve as principal conductor whenever the Director of Music is away. The ideal candidate will demonstrate both considerable skill as an organist and understanding of the Anglican choral tradition.

· Accompany the professional and volunteer choirs in weekly services and rehearsals which take place primarily on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings. 

· Share service playing responsibilities with the Director of Music for all services including Sunday mornings, feast and festival days, and occasional evening services. 

· Rehearse and conduct the choirs whenever the Director of Music is away.

· Maintain limited regular hours at the church during the work week to allow scheduling of meetings with Director of Music, Choir Personnel Manager, Music Librarian and church staff as necessary.

· Assist the Director of Music with administrative duties as assigned.


Salary of $30k–$40k per year commensurate with experience.

$2000 Continuing education funds annually

Additional pay for weddings and funerals

Three Sundays away for vacation and two Sundays away for continuing education or other professional duties not to include Christmas, Holy Week or other important church occasions.
