St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Rock Creek Parish is seeking a soprano section leader for the coming program year.  Our choir is small, yet mighty, and given the superb acoustics in our historic Church, we sound like a tribe!  Our choir is semi-professional with the presence of our four section leaders.

The parish is the oldest in the region, having begun in 1712.  We are increasingly diverse, with a strong African American heritage.  The parish currently sings from both Hymnal 1982 and Lift Every Voice and Sing II.  Our people can sing LEVAS well, and enjoy the gospel music tradition in addition to our traditional Anglican hymnody.  Typically we sing a blended service, with more emphasis on gospel music on the 3rd and 4th Sundays of the month.

We desire a multi-faceted musician who is comfortable in the small choir setting and enjoys the variety of music that we offer in the liturgy.  Comfort with the gospel tradition is especially desirable, as is the ability to improvise within it from time to time.  We treasure our volunteer singers from the parish who are an equally important part of our group.  Our section leaders do wonderful work in helping them feel comfortable, valued, and challenged musically.

We sing at the 10:30 Eucharist every Sunday beginning after Labor Day through Trinity Sunday (whenever it falls) in the late spring.  We rehearse at 9:30 AM before the service, and again afterward concluding at 1:00 PM.  Admittedly we enjoy 'getting it all done' in our short rehearsal times without an additional midweek rehearsal.  Those short rehearsals; however, prepare us to chant psalmody and offer anthems weekly in addition to leading the music of the service.  Our special services that involve the choir outside of Sunday include:  1) A special later afternoon Memorial Service on the first Sunday in November to commemorate all who have been buried in the Rock Creek Cemetery (our parish cemetery) 2) Christmas Eve (usually a 5 pm liturgy) and 3) Maundy Thursday (evening) during Holy Week.

Compensation is $150 per Sunday and we typically compensate the same for the special services.  Opportunities for singing in funerals are available on occasion.  Attendance is expected for the rehearsal before and after service, in addition to the 10:30 service.
